WOCAT - World Overview of Conservation Approaches and Technologies

One criterion for the success of the SOWAP project is the potential for independent assessment of the environmental and economic benefits of the approaches being used, and a suitable manner for transmitting this information. This is, in essence, the role of WOCAT.

During the past 10 years this organisation has developed standard methods for evaluation of soil and water conservation approaches, which are now being adopted on a global scale, and these data are used by a wide variety of extension workers in many countries to promote such practices. They are funded by a number of bodies including the FAO, UNEP (United Nations Environmental Programme) and SDC (Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation).

WOCAT are used to disseminating their information via the Internet, CDs and farmer workshops and this will form part of their role within the SOWAP project.
