| In Belgium, all experimental fields are situated in the Belgian loess belt, which is composed of a strongly incised plateau reaching up to 100m above sea level. The area is characterized by a dense network of dry valleys, resulting in a smooth, undulating topography. The depth of the loess cover ranges from a few centimetres to more than 10m. Local outcrops of Tertiary sandy deposits occur. Land use depends largely on the soil drainage type. On the plateau, forest is found, but most of the plateau is cropland. The land has been under cultivation for ~ 1000 years and the main crops are sugar beet, wheat, potatoes and maize. The arable land is especially vulnerable to erosion in spring and early summer. |

A wide range of farmers are contributing to the overall objectives of the belgian SOWAP project, and we have provided an area for them to display their farms, and interests. |
